Evolution of Postcards

Key Dates:

  • 1837- Postal system transformed to charge by weight and not distance















  • 1840- Theodore Hooke produces the first known picture postcard

















 



  • 1847- First official US Postal stamps are issued















 

 

  • 1861- John P. Charlton patents the first postcard, but fails to start a trend















  • 1869- Austria becomes the world's first country to officially issue postcards

























 





  • 1873- Postcards officially introduced to the United States postal service





















  • 1899- The first photo postcard is created by George Eastman



















  • 1907-1915- The Golden Age of Postcards

























  • 1952- Postage increases to two cents























 

  • 1952-Present- Postcards remain a great way for family and friends to connect!

 





















 

​Fun fact!

During the peak of the Postcard Golden Age (1907-1915), the US Postal Service estimated a billion postcards were mailed each year!
